March 8, 2022

This year, the Government of Canada's theme for International Women's Day is Women Inspiring Women.

The women of our municipality are a constant source of inspiration. They are business owners, farmers, managers, frontline workers, and stay-at-home mothers. They improve our community with their ideas, involvement, advocacy, and leadership. These women work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to improve the lives of those around them. I am proud that our municipality is administered by a woman, our Chief Administrative Officer Helen Collier. She leads a great team of employees that includes several women in interesting and important positions.

I would like to give special recognition to my colleague, Diane Choinière, the only woman currently serving on Clarence-Rockland's Municipal Council. She brings a different and essential perspective to our discussions at the Council table. I would also like to acknowledge the accomplishments of women elected officials who preceded her, and I sincerely thank them for their service to the citizens of Clarence-Rockland.

Unfortunately, there are still too few women in politics. According to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, only 27% of candidates in the 2018 municipal election were women. As residents of Ontario municipalities get ready to go to the polls on October 24, 2022, I encourage Clarence-Rockland women to take an interest in municipal politics, and to run for office. This is the first step to achieving parity.

Happy International Women's Day,
Mario Zanth, Mayor
