Today is the National Day of Observance for COVID-19’s victims. Exactly one year ago, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. In that moment, our daily lives immediately turned upside down.

Over the past year, 22,000 Canadians have died from the virus, and on the Eastern Ontario Health Unit’s territory, 68 of our fellow citizens have lost their lives.  COVID-19 has infected more than 864,000 Canadians and impacted our whole country.

Overnight we were isolated from our loved ones, and the words "confinement, quarantine, physical distancing, droplets and flattening the curve" appeared in our vocabulary.

Clarence-Rockland citizens and business people showed resilience by adjusting to new measures whenever the situation evolved. Our health care, and essential workers continue to provide services in difficult conditions, while some of our neighbours have unfortunately lost their jobs.

The flags at City Hall are at half-mast today to mark this sad day, and to commemorate the memory of our family members and friends who are no longer with us because of this virus. Let us take a few minutes to pay tribute and honour them in our thoughts.

Sincerely,

Guy Desjardins

Mayor
