By-laws and Policies

The following is a listing of municipal by-laws and policies most frequently requested by the public.

By-laws contained in this section have been prepared for research and reference purposes only. For legal purposes, certified copies of by-laws may be obtained from the Clerk’s office.

Some by-laws may not have been translated to French, if you require a translation please contact the Clerk’s office.

By-laws and policies both guide how the municipality operates, but they are used for different purposes.

A by-law is a local law passed by Council.
It sets rules that everyone must follow and can be enforced. By-laws often deal with things like parking, animals, property standards, or business licensing. If a by-law is not followed, fines or other penalties may apply.

A policy is a set of guidelines approved by Council or administration.
It explains how decisions are made or how services are delivered, usually within the municipality. Policies guide staff actions but do not have the force of law and are not enforced with penalties.
